Last week the young people on Talent Match North East attended a course that helped them gain practical work-based skills and improve their confidence.
TRN Train, a Gateshead based training provider, ran the Healthy Home, Healthy Head course, aimed at building construction and DIY skills, that also with a focus on mental wellbeing.
The course covered a range of practical skills including: basic plumbing, brickwork, concreting, joinery, plastering, and painting and decorating. Also included in the course was holistic lifestyle advice such as diet and nutrition, drug and alcohol awareness and mental health.
A holistic approach to learning, such as the approach in the Healthy Home, Healthy Head course, is essential in helping young people who are furthest from the job market gain useful skills that employers find attractive, while identifying which areas the young people would like to work in.
Our evaluation survey revealed that the young people improved their confidence in 5 different construction skills, and all of them identified at least one area they would like to find work in.
The confidence this course brings to the young people is invaluable as they learnt to work together in a team and manage projects.
Talent Match young person, Ray, spoke about how his confidence increased throughout the course:
“It’s fiddly, buy you’ll get the knack of it in the end,” he said.
“The great thing about this course is even if it’s not about a trade, you can just do everyday life work on your own kitchen.”
The TRN tutor said “We have a number of staff that can deliver all sorts of qualifications, including NVQs and Diplomas.”
Talent Match North East is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and managed by the Wise Group.
